Our apple varieties

In sunny Vårdö, in the heart of the Åland archipelago, we grow apples shaped by our unique microclimate. The cool nights, abundant sunshine, and the proximity of the sea give the fruit its fresh sweetness, crisp texture, and beautiful shades of color – a taste of the place we call home.

Wilton’s Star (Red Jonaprince Select) turns red to dark red when ripe. The apple has white to golden-yellow flesh that is relatively firm.

The flavor is aromatic with a fine balance of sweetness and just the right acidity. The taste is at its best after a day at room temperature and has a character that is slightly reminiscent of pear.

Wilton’s Star is a true dessert apple that can be eaten fresh, used in salads, pies, or other baked goods.

Domestic apples soften quickly at room temperature. For this reason, apples are best stored in the refrigerator at +2–4 degrees. Wilton’s Star is one of our best-keeping varieties and can even be stored until August under proper storage conditions.

Gloster is a true winter apple with excellent storage durability.

Of all our apple varieties, Gloster is harvested last, from mid to late October. In some years, snow has even arrived before the Gloster harvest has been fully completed (as in the picture). Gloster develops a red covering color with a green to yellow background.

Gloster has firm and crisp flesh. Its thin skin makes it pleasant to eat. Despite the fruit’s low acidity, the taste is very fresh, which makes the apple well-suited as a snack.

Domestic apples soften quickly at room temperature. Therefore, the fruit is best stored at home in the refrigerator at a temperature of +2–4 degrees.
